Interesting and sad. In El Diario, La Prensa which is a Latino newspaper, they reported what appears to be the latest in a rash of suicides in young soldiers returning from Iraq. This one particular soldier is reported as having confided in his friends that he couldn’t deal with the murders he was forced to commit, and that he thought he (and the U.S.) was there to help the people of Iraq. He was 28 years old. His death makes the total number of Puerto Rican soldiers to commit suicide (upon their return from duty) 75. Collateral damage my ass. How long will it be before Bush receives his comeuppance? Perhaps what is more interesting is the fact that his honorable discharge was left out of the story. What was the purpose of that? I can speculate far enough to say that it makes the victim seem like an unsophisticated, uneducated soldier that does not understand the nuances of war or the actions that the U.S. deems necessary to ensure our homeland security. Why didn’t this young man seek medical assistance? Was medical assistance readily available, or are there so many soldiers suffering from PTSD that the government can’t keep up? For those of you that read Spanish, you can find the complete story here.
