Yo Soy…

My birthday-2011

Denise Valdes, a Phd candidate of Composition & Cultural Rhetoric at Syracuse University, Boricua, and Mama of three beautiful hijas. My research interests are Latina feminism, language & culture, and Boricua identity on and off La Isla Del Encanto. This space is devoted to those efforts, and dedicated to mi Mama Milagros, mi hermana Stephanie, and mis hijas Ariana, Amanda y Marina.

To all who visit and leave words of wisdom, sorrow, or enlightenment, Bienvenidas!

Hurray! Another Latina rhetorician! My current specialty is in medical communications, and you should have seen the fun trying to bridge biology, ethnography, and rhetoric readings for my exams….

    Best wishes for yours!

When I first glimpsed this blog, I was so excited about a space created for rhetorica latina, but was then dismayed upon perusing it to see its narrow focus on Puerto Rican culture. As a Mexican-Amercian female rhetorician in the US, I am (once again) feeling the exclusion of being “other.”

I am sorry about that! I am definitely not trying to do that. The irony of your statement is that I feel like you do. Throughout my scholarly journey I found that all of the Latina feminism pieces dealt with Mexicanas, and I found myself asking “What about us?”. I thought that it would be nice to have a space that Boricua women can call their own. That said, I am happy to share this space with all of my Latina sisters! Bienvenidas todas!
